Born and raised in Memphis, Lawrence Matthews III, aka Don Lifted, uses a unique amalgamation of hip-hop, electronic and emo to form his sound. He caught the attention of his current label Fat Possum at mid-tour hometown show, with the first release 'Lost in Orion' out earlier this year, followed by 'Golden (The Wait)'. Now Don Lifted releases a new single 'Brain Fluid', alongside family-centred music video. Melancholic electric guitar plucks open the song and Lawrence's vocals are plunged into a lower pitch, rippling with reverb. After a little while, a lethargic beat is introduced, creating a bleak but cosy atmosphere where Lawrence lays his down his emo rap. But it's the spoken words that close the song that really touch us: 'I feel losing my self, my sense of self and my identity...I'd really like to showcase my full self and not everyone that loves you is able to see you as your full self, and so that's always something that I'm conscious of...is making sure I'm a whole person and a person that I'm loving', he continues, 'in the process of loving each other'.
